Multimedia journalist Aaron J. Montes lives in El Paso, TX, and a former candidate for the El Paso City Council District 7 seat. He is a former reporter for the El Paso Times as a Watchdog reporter.

He covered local government, immigration and general news for the newspaper. He has participated in collaborations with the USA Today Network and New York Times covering immigration in El Paso and along the southern border.

His reporting during the Aug. 3 mass shooting in El Paso received recognition for individual and collaborative work with the El Paso Times. His contribution to investigative collaborations with the New York Times and USA Today Network also received recognition for coverage of migration issues in 2019.

Before heading to the Times, Montes worked for El Paso Inc., a locally owned business journal. There he wrote about business, international commerce and politics.
